I’ve spent the last week or so feeling like sh*t while getting over whatever sickness I had. I got the flu shot for work around that time so… coincidence?! I think not! (Just kidding – it totally is coincidence.) Anyway! When I’m sick, I generally become one with my couch or bed and this week was no exception. But that doesn’t mean I skimped on nutrients. No, no, my friends. I try to keep my fridge and pantry stocked with healthy foods and snacks but my stores were getting emptier and emptier as the days wore on. So, today! We’ve got a Healthy Grocery Haul from Trader Joe’s.
The majority of my grocery shopping is done at two stores: Jewel and Trader Joe’s. I was a die-hard Jewel shopper until I discovered the beauty that is Trader Joe’s so now I like to mix it up.
I love Trader Joe’s because it’s budget-friendly and it has a variety of foods I may not otherwise try/buy. They have something for every type of diet: gluten-free, vegetarian/vegan, paleo, omnivores, gluten-lovers – WHATEVER. And they have a huge alcohol selection. While I haven’t ventured into their liquor aisle, I’ve heard great things.

This broccoli is the best. Hands. Down. The best. I prefer to buy this broccoli over the exact same product at Jewel because it’s almost $2 at TJs than at Jewel. All I have to do is snip off a corner and pop the whole bag (!!) into the microwave for 3.5-4 minutes and I’ve got steamed broccoli.
Riced cauliflower is my new thing (or I want it to be). Yes, I know I’m like 4 years late on the cauli fad but it is what it is. I’m actually sharing a Honey Sriracha Chicken recipe with Cauliflower Fried Rice recipe soon so be on the lookout for that.
Who LOVES butternut squash?! I DO! It’s one of my favorite veggies to roast and all it takes is a little olive oil, salt + pepper (and more, if you’d like). But I HATE peeling it. And cutting it. It is such a pain in my ass. And that’s probably because I have terrible knives. But all I know is: I can save 10 minutes of my life and spare 10 minutes of anger by buying it pre-peeled and chopped.
These are my absolute favorite items from Trader Joe’s. We typically buy 2 packs every time we go because we go through them so fast! They only take a few minutes to warm up (they’re fully cooked) and a serving size is super low in sugar – but they don’t taste like it!
I used to buy fresh baby spinach from my local Jewel but the Jewel closest to me now doesn’t usually have the good stuff so… I buy bagged spinach from Trader Joe’s! Again, a bag of non-organic baby spinach is just $1.99 (while organic is something like $2.99). I throw my spinach into smoothies, pastas, hashes, whatever, so I like to buy more than 1 bag at a time.
…and the not so healthy
Okay, so these aren’t crazy healthy but they are REALLY GOOD. And fresh. If you buy the burritos from TJs, you better have a plan to eat them within 3 days of purchase or else they’ll go bad. I love them because they’re done in less than 5 minutes so if I forgot to thaw meat or don’t have any leftovers for lunch, I can just grab one of these and my meal is done. The nutrient profile is also pretty OK – 1 serving (which is ½ burrito) is 300 calories, 14g protein, 9g fat, and 42g carb. I mean, it’s definitely got a better profile than say, a Chipotle burrito, and it’s about half the price, as well.
We’ll also get some other miscellaneous items as we need them. Trader Joe’s everything bagels are THE BEST but you’ve gotta eat them fast or they’ll go bad. I’m a big fan of their Everything but the Bagel Seasoning for sprinkling over my eggs or steamed vegetables. Trader Joe’s also has some delicious treats and their frozen meals are highly regarded (though we’ve only tried a few).
