OH HELLO FRIENDS. I cannot believe I am already writing out my THIRD Running Recap for the Chicago Marathon! WHAT THE F-! Where has the time gone? 3 weeks down, 13 weeks go to! HOW CRAZY. So last week I experienced all of the seasons, including extreme heat. This week? Much nicer. The temperatures have cooled down significantly and I haven’t felt like barfing during my runs. Nice.
Before we get into the Running Recap for the past week, I want to talk a little bit about Perseverance.
I’ll be the first to admit that doing things I don’t want to do, for whatever reason, really sucks. I will also be the first to admit that there have been times when I’ve given up on things because they got too hard, I didn’t have enough time (read: I didn’t make enough time), I was bored, whatever. But really in the last 6 months or so, I’ve grown up a lot: if I start something, I finish it out. Or, if I need to do something, I just do it.
Take this blog for example: it’s challenging to make time to write up a post or prepare a recipe when I’m working full-time and training for the marathon. It would be really easy for me to just quit. But you know what? I really love my little corner of the internet. It’s fun, I’m learning a lot, and it’s a creative outlet for me (who knew I was creative? not me). I am also discovering some new interests like, cameras are cool and coding (the little amount I can do) is ALSO cool. Crazy, right?
Or we can apply it to running: there are days when running is really fricken hard. Maybe my legs feel heavy and tight, the weather sucks, or I’m just tired! But I realized on one of my particularly difficult runs this past week is that these sucky runs make me a better runner. Or the days when I spend hours trying to figure something out for the blog make me a better blogger. I’m learning, I’m pushing through the challenging times. It sounds like common sense, sure, but sometimes ya just gotta go through it to get it.
So anyway, that’s my little spiel on perseverance. Basically: keep doing the sucky things to get better at them, make them less sucky, or to use it as a stepping-stone (like a sucky job).
- Thursday: Easy 3 miles
- Friday: Easy 3 miles
- Saturday: Easy 5 miles
- Sunday: Easy 5 miles – see above about perseverance 😉 legs felt heavy and I realized that I definitely need to be stretching after each and every run.
- Monday: None, went to the gym instead though! I did some reading over the weekend about weak glutes and how it effects running performance – YIKES! I definitely hit my glutes at the gym. Ain’t nobody got time for injury.
- Tuesday: Easy 5 miles & a nice, long STRETCH!
- Wednesday: No run, a total day off and taking full advantage by going for a walk, catching up on my crappy TV, and working on the blog 😉
And that’s week 3s Running Recap all wrapped up! Stay tuned for my take on a Spicy Margarita this Friday!
